The CCH US Master Tax Guide is the the best product of its kind on the market. In additional to being extremely affordable, it is comprehensive, yet very easy to use and well indexed. And if I need to go deeper into any issue, there are references galore.
I have been using this product since 1985 and have always been satisfied.

The practical tax edition is always available, eaxy to reference and the concise text is easy to read. Bold headings helps the research to flow quicker. Page tabs for later followup are easy to apply and highlights of the key points helps to bring clarity to issues of frequent interest. While opinions are not found in the CCH handbook the reader can rely upon the text for it's compliance accuracy which enables a user to formulate their own opinions - based upon reliable guidance. Just don't go over the edge in the opinion arena.

I've subscribed to the master tax guide by CCH for the past 20 years and it's my go to book for tax questions all year round. I would like to see more common topics on the CPE opportunities to make it a more useful CPE experience.

e-book printing woes
PostedMarch 1, 2011

Purchsed the ebook with the understanding that I would be able to print 25 pages per week. This is not the case, it appears that the total number of pages that you can print is 25 TOTAL. This exception to the general rule is not stated in the product description. Asked for refund which was denied (did offer discount on additional purchase of hard copy). DON'T BUY THE E_BOOK.

I would have given it NO STARS if it would let me.
We received the flyer about the iPad compatible e-books. So, we got 3 iPads for our 3 tax lawyers (with varying levels of computer experience).
We installed the free Adobe Digital Editions software on the local computers and installed the free Bluefire PDF reader on the iPads.
(The installation of the PC and iPad software was simple. The installation of the e-book itself was very difficult. The installation instructions were worthless, and technical support was clueless. I would consider my self a computer "power user." I finally figured out how to install the e-book on the iPad by myself.)
First, yes they do work and they do display the contents of the 2011 US Master Tax Guide. When I was at lunch with a client, I was able to answer his questions regarding depreciation by referring to my US Master Tax Guide.
Is this something I will use everyday instead of my paper copy? Probably not.
The e-Book installed on my computer only works with Adobe Digital Editions - and it can't print. When I research a topic, I like to print the relevant sections and add them to my work papers. NO CAN DO! I still have to get my hard copy book that I paid for separately and make a photocopy of the relevant pages.
There is a lot to not like about the Adobe Digital Edition Software. For starters, the navigation is clumsy. Trying to find the book, page, section, etc. is not intuitive.
The PC version of the e-book has problems too. For instance, look in the index under "Dependency exemption" with a subheading of "divorced and/or separated parents, tie-breaking rules", it is not possible to "hot link to Section 139 or 139A.
I don't always like the default file names that publishers give their e-books. For instance, I want to sort my resources by tax year. NO CAN DO!
This became glaringly apparent when the file name for the IRC was "Internal ReVENUE CODE" - notice the mix of upper and lower case letters? And this is supposed to be premium content? Adobe Digital Editions and CCH won't let you change/fix it!
The Bluefire Reader for the iPad is primitive. For instance, iAnnotate PDF is much better. You can have multiple PDF files/books open at once. You can have different folders for organizing your PDF files. iAnnotate supports Drop Box. No such luck with Bluefire. Plus, the Bluefire navigation is very basic. I am sure that Bluefire Reader would be fine for a 10-20 page document, maybe even passable for a 200 page docuement - but this is a 900+ page book. NOT GOOD!
On the iPad the navigation and searching are VERY SLOW! If the iPad 2 rumors about a dual-core CPU are true, then this may help. We will see.
In summary, I bill by the hour. Does the e-book make me more efficient, save me time, or make me money? NO. NOT YET.
Right now, I would consider it a gimmick or a very good way to justify the purchase of an expensive iPad to your partners.
The above is merely based upon my limited experiences. Your mileage may vary.

I have confirmed with several people at CCH that the 2011 US Master Tax Guide CD will not be compatible with my new Dell 64 bit computers (as was true for 2010). I have heard that they are issuing an internet based version as an alternative but so far this is just a rumor.

I am always using this book to look up quick answers. The index is easy to use and I go back year after year to this guide. I think each company should provide these guides to others outside of tax such as HR/Payroll, CFO's and Controllers.

Finally a tax guide that actually makes sense; in simple language I can understand without the need of acquiring a degree in tax. The examples used to illustrate the point is wonderful. I can actually read over a section and not feel brain crazy trying to figure out what it was that I just read. I would continue to purchase this Guide over and over again. Excellent source of information.
